Interview with Phil Moore

Helping clients identify and turn around business-critical problems is a real motivator for me: turning a failing programme around; coaching teams that are struggling; managing the introduction of new, better technology or systems; identifying skill gaps, recruiting and targeting new expertise. Yes, good honest problem-solving - you can’t beat that for satisfaction.

I also enjoy listening and bringing clarity to muddled or confusing situations. When my clients talk about barriers, issues or difficulties, I listen carefully, focusing on the critical facts and working it through to resolution. This Steve Jobs quote is a favourite: “...one of my mantras – focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”

I also find motivation from working environments where the status quo can be challenged, where the norm can be replaced with innovative and creative alternatives, where new products are piloted and created or new techniques can be applied; environments where fresh ideas can flourish. Helping teams turn ideas into deliverable products and then into reality is so very fulfilling.

I am a strategist at heart. I expect my teams to plan ahead, and I encourage and support them in doing that. This old proverb is my motto: “A vision without a plan is just a dream. A plan without a vision is just drudgery, but a vision with a plan can change the world.” It is so important to have focus. 

Maintaining a good work-life balance is so very important - without good health (physical and mental) and motivation how can you properly meet your clients’ needs? I am also strict in applying this ethos to any team that I manage, with mental health always at the top of my agenda.

Continual learning sits at the heart of Sisu, and yes, it’s great to keep up to date, but the real satisfaction comes when you can pass that knowledge on. I’m qualified in Scaled Agile and am a Certified SAFe® 4 Program Consultant. Imparting the latest thinking to clients or training teams in newly developed techniques is rewarding and one of Sisu’s core services. 

And of course, with today’s climate emergency, the future has to be more sustainable. Working with businesses that are actively becoming more sustainable is a pleasure. With knowledge comes understanding and with understanding comes respect and caring. So the task of advocating change is vital if people are to start to care and change their behaviour.

I’m based in South East Wales, so my reach extends to clients across South Wales, Bristol, Swindon, Gloucester, Cheltenham and London, but I am happy and able to be flexible.

For leisure, I love exploring off the beaten track and I am passionate about wildlife. I’m an active trail runner, specialising in barefoot running, and, although I do compete in the odd competitive event, the real enjoyment comes from the sense of freedom trail running offers.
